# Dynamic tariff

Also known as: Dynamischer Tarif, Dynamischer Stromtarif, Dynamischer Netztarif, Dynamic electricity tariff, Dynamic grid tariff

A dynamic tariff is an electricity tariff whose price changes over the day with the exchange price and the expected grid load, instead of being fixed in high and low tariff periods. EKZ has sent price signals at 15-minute intervals since 1 January 2026 in a band of plus/minus 5 Rp./kWh around the standard tariff; CKW varies its grid tariff between 0.1 and 32 Rp./kWh. Businesses with storage, charging stations and an energy management system shift their consumption into the hours with low prices.

The rigid structure of high and low tariffs dates from a time when grid load followed the daily routine. With photovoltaics at midday, heat pumps in the morning and charging stations in the evening, the expensive and the low-price hours move. A dynamic tariff translates that shift into a price signal the customer can use.

Three utilities show the range of models. Since 1 January 2026, EKZ has coupled its energy tariff to the day-ahead spot price (band plus/minus 5 Rp./kWh) and its grid tariff to the grid load forecast (band minus 5 to plus 15 Rp./kWh); active users save around 5 percent on average, according to EKZ ([EKZ, dynamic optional tariffs](https://www.ekz.ch/de/blue/wissen/2026/dynamische-wahltarife-2027.html)). CKW offers a dynamic grid tariff of 0.1 to 32 Rp./kWh under the name "Netz business dynamic" and cites grid costs up to 40 percent lower ([CKW](https://www.ckw.ch/energie/strom/dynamischer-tarif-fuer-privatkunden-und-unternehmen)). ewz, in a pilot with around 650 e-mobility customers, sets the high and low tariff periods week by week according to the expected grid load.

The benefit depends on controllability. Without shiftable loads, a business on a dynamic tariff merely pays a different average price. With a battery storage system, charging infrastructure and an [energy management system](https://www.ampere-dynamic.ch/en/knowledge/glossary/energiemanagementsystem/) that reads the price signals, the tariff becomes a source of revenue and can be combined with [peak shaving](https://www.ampere-dynamic.ch/en/knowledge/glossary/peak-shaving/).
