In most cases, solar power from your own roof is cheaper than grid electricity. A high level of self-consumption also significantly improves the profitability of a PV system, as the feed-in tariff from grid operators is often low. For this reason, the connection for self-consumption (ZEV) offers an optimal solution, which has now been further developed with the virtual ZEV (vZEV).
What is a virtual ZEV?
A classic ZEV enables several consumers within a building or on a property to join forces and act together as one customer with the energy supplier. This eliminates the need for individual electricity meters from the grid operator within the ZEV and the self-generated solar power can be used much more efficiently.
The virtual ZEV (vZEV) expands this concept: it enables consumers to be connected across several properties. This is done using digital meters and billing systems without the need for a physical connection between the sites.
What is a local electricity community (LEG)?
A local electricity community (LEG) is an even broader form of electricity sharing. Here, not only individual buildings, but entire districts or communities can jointly manage and optimize their electricity. This creates a locally used, sustainable energy system that is less dependent on external electricity suppliers.
The following graphic illustrates the difference between a classic ZEV, a virtual ZEV and a LEG. Multi-family houses and single-family houses are linked here as examples. However, this concept can also be applied to a community of several companies.
